Pune, 13th July 2024: Pune is now grappling with an alarming rise in Zika virus infections. The number of confirmed Zika cases in the city has reached 19, with a senior citizen among the latest to be diagnosed. The Municipal Health Department has initiated measures to combat the spread, particularly focusing on vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and the elderly.

In addition to pregnant women, who account for 10 of the 19 reported cases, senior citizens appear to be at heightened risk. A 61-year-old resident of Hadapsar, initially admitted to a private hospital for gastroenteritis, has tested positive for the Zika virus. Treatment for the virus has commenced at the facility.

The Erandwane area has emerged as a hotspot, reporting six of the 19 cases. The distribution of other cases is as follows:

Erandwane: 6
Mundhwa: 3
Dahanukar Colony: 2
Pashan: 3
Ambegaon: 1
Kharadi: 3
Yerawada: 1

The Zika virus presents symptoms such as joint pain, headache, conjunctivitis (red eyes), and vomiting. Additional signs include fever, red spots on the body, and diarrhea. All patients in Pune have exhibited symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness.

The Municipal Health Department has ramped up efforts to control the spread of the virus. Pregnant women, in particular, are being tested across the city to ensure early detection and treatment.
