Pune, 17th March 2025: Social worker Yojana Gharat, founder of SMIT Foundation, Bhiwandi, has been awarded the 49th ‘Adarsha Mata Puraskar – Matrutva Samman’ for the year 2024-2025 in recognition of her exemplary service in elderly care, leprosy patient support, and women empowerment.

Gharat has dedicated her life to providing a safe and dignified environment for destitute senior citizens through her initiatives at SMIT Old Age Home & Care Foundation. Over the years, she has provided shelter, medical assistance, and nourishment to more than 1,000 elderly individuals, including those affected by leprosy. Currently, 126 senior citizens reside at the center under her care.

Having spent part of her childhood at the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and later in Thane, Gharat drew early inspiration from social service. For over 23 years, she has worked extensively in areas ranging from elderly care to special needs children and women empowerment. Through SMIT Foundation, she continues to foster self-reliance among women and create meaningful social change.

Supported by her two daughters and a dedicated team, Gharat envisions expanding her facility to accommodate more destitute senior citizens. Recognized with several honors, she remains committed to her mission, stating, “My life is dedicated to serving the needy, and there is no looking back.”

Trustees of the Adarsha Mata Puraskar committee recently visited the SMIT Foundation Centre, where they interacted with the residents and learned about their daily activities. They described the experience as heartwarming and inspiring.
