New Delhi, 7th August 2024: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued an alert about a new scam where cybercriminals are posing as CBI officers on WhatsApp, using the agency’s logo as their display picture to deceive and extort money from unsuspecting users. These scammers have drained crores of rupees by convincing victims they are chatting with legitimate CBI officials. The CBI emphasizes that its logo is being misused in this scam and advises the public to remain cautious.

Using CBI Logo as WhatsApp DP

According to the CBI, scammers are exploiting the publicly available CBI logo, displaying it as their WhatsApp profile picture to gain trust. Victims are led to believe they are communicating with high-ranking officials. The CBI clarified that the logo is being misused, and these criminals are using threats of legal action and arrest to extort money from individuals.

CBI Advises Caution

The CBI has posted multiple warnings on its official X handle, urging people to be vigilant about any communication claiming to be from the CBI. “Publicly available CBI logo is misused by some criminals as their display picture to make calls, mainly through WhatsApp, to extort money. The public is advised to be cautious and not fall prey to such scams. Any such attempt should be immediately reported to the local Police,” the CBI stated.

The agency further advised that a real CBI officer will never ask for personal or financial information via email or phone. If someone receives a call purportedly from a CBI officer, they should verify the authenticity of the call before trusting it.

Tips for Avoiding Scams

– Avoid sharing personal and financial information over the phone or on digital platforms.
– Do not click on unknown links or download attachments from unfamiliar senders.
– Report any suspicious activity immediately to the local police station.

The CBI stresses the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting to prevent further victimization by these scams.
