Pune, 7th April 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has submitted a report to the Irrigation Department, demanding 7.94 TMC of water to be reserved from the Khadakwasla dam chain project for the five months from April to August. The demand has been made in anticipation of a water shortage if the monsoon delays this year. The administration has also predicted an intense summer with low rainfall due to El Niño.

The Maharashtra state government had previously ordered the PMC to prepare a water management plan and emergency water supply planning plan, which had been delayed. The municipality has finally submitted the information to the Water Resources Department, stating the demand for water till the end of August. Currently, 1470 MLD of Khadakwasla Dam and 150 to 170 MLD of Bhama Askhed Dam are being taken for the city by the PMC, and there is no water shortage in the city.

However, the final decision on the demand for water will be made by the government and the Water Resources Department, based on which the future water status of the city will be determined. The state government has ordered the PMC to prepare for the water crisis and submit its plan by March 28th. The municipal corporation and the Irrigation Department have recently held a meeting regarding the situation.
