Pune, October 26, 2020: After years of wait, the areas under Loni Kalbhor and Lonikand police stations have been finally included in Pune City Police jurisdiction. The Home Department of Maharashtra government today issued a notification in this regard.

The government has also restructured the administrative set up after inclusion of these two police stations, which were earlier with Pune rural police. In the last two decades, there has been massive urbanisation in Wagholi and Loni Kalbhor areas. The staff at the police stations have almost remained the same despite a manifold rise in population and crime rate.

Now Lonikand police station will come jurisdiction of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Yerwada division) under Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) area. Loni Kalbhor police station has been included under the jurisdiction of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Hadapsar division) under Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5). Both Zone 4 and Zone 5 DCPs report to Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region).

The inclusion of Lonikand and Loni Kalbhor stations in Pune city police means there will be more manpower (about 100-300) staff and three more layers of supervision (additional commissioner, joint commissioner and commissioner). The prohibitory orders will be issued by the Pune city police instead of getting orders from the district collector.

About 10 days ago, MLA Ashok Pawar had written a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar demanding immediate approval for separate police stations at Wagholi and Uruli Kanchan due to inadequate police force to the ratio required for the population and increasing crime rate.

The proposal had been pending with the office of the Director-General of Police (DGP). MLA Pawar had demanded that Pawar should pay attention and immediately approve the proposal for an independent police station for Uruli Kanchan and Wagholi.

MLA Pawar had earlier said, “The population of Wagholi has reached 1.5 to 2 lakh. Wagholi falls under the limits of Lonikand police station under Pune rural police. Considering the growing population and rising crime rate in the area, a proposal to set up a separate police station for Wagholi has already been sent to the Home Department. The proposal has been pending in the office of the Director-General of Police for the past six months.”

Speaking about Uruli Kanchan police station, MLA Pawar had said, “Uruli Kanchan is currently under the jurisdiction of Loni Kalbhor police station under Pune rural police. However, considering the growing population of Uruli Kanchan and the rising crime rate in the area, an independent police station was recommended for Uruli Kanchan three years ago.”

According to Pune rural police, due to insufficient police personnel in the district police force, the number of police personnel were less in the two police stations.
