Wagholi, 7th October 2024: A fatal accident on the Pune-Nagar Highway claimed the life of 32-year-old Sirichandana Vishwanath Hevtam, while her husband, Vishwanath, sustained injuries.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning, October 6, at approximately 10 AM, near Chitale Sweet Home in Wagholi. A speeding dumper collided with their two-wheeler, leading to the incident.

The couple had been returning home after playing badminton with friends in the Baif Road area when the dumper struck their bike. According to witnesses, the impact was severe, causing Sirichandana, who was riding pillion, to be thrown off the bike and crushed under the wheels of the heavy vehicle. Her husband, Vishwanath, was also thrown from the bike but survived with injuries. The driver of the dumper fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Authorities were alerted and rushed to the site, where Sirichandana’s body was sent to Sassoon Hospital for postmortem. The accident caused significant traffic congestion on the highway as onlookers gathered, shocked by the tragedy.

This marks the second fatal accident involving a dumper on this stretch of road within the past two weeks, raising serious concerns about illegal heavy vehicle traffic. Local residents and commuters have voiced frustration over the frequent violations of restrictions on heavy vehicles, which are prohibited on city roads during peak hours from 7 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 9 PM. Despite recent enforcement efforts, the dumper involved in Sunday’s accident was found to be operating during restricted hours
