Varanasi, 4th June 2024: In the recently concluded 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi secured victory in the Varanasi constituency for the third consecutive time, as announced by the Election Commission today. This time, PM Modi faced competition from Congress candidate Ajay Rai. PM Modi emerged victorious with 6,12,970 votes, accounting for 54.24% of the total votes, while Rai garnered 4,60,457 votes, constituting 40.74% of the total.

While PM Modi’s hat-trick win is noteworthy, it comes with a slight setback as his vote share has experienced a decline of approximately 9 percentage points compared to the previous election cycles. In the 2019 elections, PM Modi secured the seat with a larger share of 63.62% of the votes, and in 2014, he won with 56.37% of the votes.

On the other hand, Ajay Rai’s performance showed a significant improvement, particularly in comparison to the 2019 elections, where he secured only 14% of the votes. This time, Rai’s vote share increased to 40.74%. This surge can be attributed partly to the seat-sharing arrangement between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, as the latter did not field a candidate from the Varanasi constituency.
