Pune, 2nd May 2023: The Collector of Pune, Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, has directed urgent measures to be taken to prevent accidents on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway following a recent accident involving a truck and a private travel bus near Swami Narayan Mandir in Narhe.

The meeting was attended by various officials, including Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal, NHAI Project Director Sanjay Kadam, PMC Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne and representatives from the Save Life Foundation. The meeting discussed measures to be taken in connection with the accidents occurring on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway between Katraj tunnel and Navale Bridge.

It was noted during the meeting that the entire road from Katraj tunnel to Navale Bridge is downhill, causing drivers to drive in neutral in an attempt to save fuel, which increases vehicle speed. This can cause unnecessary heat and pressure in the brakes, leading to brake failure and accidents. To address this issue, the speed limit for heavy vehicles should be reduced, and separate lanes for heavy vehicles should be established.

The meeting also discussed other measures, such as establishing police checkpoints for traffic control, implementing Public Announcement Systems (PAS), increasing the number of ramblers to reduce the speed of vehicles, deploying cranes near police stations to provide emergency assistance, and installing height barricades near Dari Bridge to prevent heavy vehicles from entering the service road.

In addition to these measures, the district collector directed the Pune city traffic branch to provide two interceptor vehicles, one to the rural police and one to the rural police, to immediately stop vehicles violating traffic rules and speed limits on this stretch of the national highway.

A detailed project report of works has been prepared under the long-term measures to prevent accidents on this route, and a meeting will be held soon between the Chief Minister and the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister to discuss the project.

NHAI Project Director Sanjay Kadam said that it would be useful to create an exit point under the emergency escape plan so that vehicles whose brakes fail while driving have an option to move off the road.

The measures discussed at the meeting are urgent and necessary to prevent accidents on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway. The district collector’s directive to implement these measures demonstrates a proactive approach to ensuring the safety of road users. It is hoped that these measures will be implemented quickly and effectively to prevent accidents and save lives.
