Mumbai: In a significant move to protect the environment, the Maharashtra state cabinet decided on Wednesday to impose a fine of Rs 50,000 for cutting trees without permission. This represents a substantial increase from the current fine of Rs 1,000.

According to officials, any trees cut without proper authorization and the vehicles used to transport them will be confiscated by the government. An amendment to Section 4 of the Maharashtra Tree Felling (Regulation) Act will be made, and an ordinance will be introduced to enforce this change.

Activist Zoru Bhathena pointed out that existing laws already have strict provisions for illegal tree cutting, including fines and imprisonment. “But how many people have been punished over the years? Practically none,” Bhathena remarked, highlighting the need for better enforcement.

The new fine aims to deter unauthorized tree cutting and enhance the protection of Maharashtra’s green cover. The state government hopes that stricter penalties will lead to better compliance and preservation of the environment.
