Pune, 14th October 2024: With the Maharashtra Assembly elections looming, the state cabinet has made significant decisions ahead of the impending implementation of the election code of conduct. In today’s cabinet meeting, the government approved two new Pune Metro lines, a major move that is expected to enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure.

The newly approved metro routes are:
1. Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi
2. Nalstop-Dahanukar Colony-Warje-Manikbagh

The total budget for these metro projects has been set at ₹9,897 crore. The new routes will cover a combined distance of 31.63 kilometers, featuring 28 stations, which will expand and strengthen the Pune Metro network, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve the city’s public transport efficiency.

The Khadakwasla-Kharadi route will pass through Dalviwadi, Nanded City, Dhairi Phata, Manikbagh, Hingane, Rajaram Bridge, P.L. Deshpande Park, Dandekar Bridge, and Swargate, before reaching Kharadi via Hadapsar. The second metro line will start from Nalstop and pass through Paud Phata, Karve Putala, Dahanukar Colony, Karvenagar, Warje, Daulat Nagar (Suncity), and Manikbagh.

These two metro lines are expected to significantly alleviate the city’s traffic woes, offering a faster, more reliable alternative for commuters. Once completed, these routes will cater to the rapidly growing areas of Hadapsar, Kharadi, and Warje, helping Pune’s expanding population travel more efficiently.

Pune MP and Union Minister Muralidhar Mohol shared the news on social media, expressing his gratitude towards Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar for their support in empowering Pune’s public transport. “Two new metro lines for Pune! The decision by the coalition government will strengthen the city’s metro network and improve public transport,” Mohol posted on social media platform X.

Ranjit Naiknavare, president Credai Pune Metro, said, “The expansion of the metro network represents a significant advancement in public transport, positively impacting the real estate sector by stimulating demand for both housing and commercial spaces. With rising pressure on road infrastructure, the metro will provide a faster and more efficient means of commuting to workplaces. The new route 1 and route 2 proposed will cover the fastest growing areas of pune and as such will afford a facility to connect most of the current city through the expanded metro network.
As redevelopment efforts continue, consumers increasingly seek affordable housing in peripheral areas, and an expanded metro network will be instrumental in saving valuable commuting time. We hope that these networks can be developed fully within the next 3 years fully so that the infrastructure disruptions on roads will be minimum.”

The cabinet’s approval comes as the state prepares for the upcoming assembly elections, with the new metro projects signaling a commitment to addressing Pune’s pressing infrastructure needs.
