Pune, 27th October 2024: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that it will not contest the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Instead, the party will focus on supporting the India Alliance in its effort to defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This decision was confirmed by Mukund Kirdat, AAP’s Maharashtra spokesperson.

Kirdat explained that although parties like Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena offered AAP seats to contest in the state, the party’s priority is to prevent a division of opposition votes. He emphasized that splitting votes would risk allowing the BJP to return to power.

“Aam Aadmi Party is a part of the India Alliance at the national level and will help the constituent parties of the alliance to defeat the BJP. It is not a matter of contesting seats but of defeating the oppressive, dictatorial BJP,” Kirdat stated.

He further highlighted concerns over the possibility of a BJP government coming back to power due to fragmented opposition votes, referencing the situation in Haryana as an example.

“AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal has also made it clear that we will do our best to help the India Alliance win in Maharashtra,” Kirdat added.
