Pune, 24th July 2024: Maintenance cables valued at Rs 1 lakh have been stolen from under the Metro tracks between Bund Garden and Kalyaninagar stations over the past three weeks.

The theft, involving 450 meters of copper-containing cables, was discovered last Friday, prompting the Metro authorities to file a complaint with the Yerawada police on Monday.

Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director of Pune Metro, explained, “These maintenance cables are essential for earthing purposes. Fortunately, the theft has not disrupted Metro train operations between Bund Garden and Wadgaonsheri, as we have a backup system in place. After discovering the theft, we immediately reported it. There have been multiple thefts on Metro lines recently, and we have filed complaints with various police stations. Investigations are ongoing.”

Inspector Chhagan Kapse of the Yerawada police noted, “Stealing these cables is exceptionally challenging because they were installed on girders elevated from the ground. The exact method used to pilfer the cables remains unclear. Despite this, Metro officials assure us that the theft has not impacted train operations.”

Inspector Kapse added, “We are reviewing CCTV footage from the Metro stations to determine how the cables were stolen.”
