Pune, 20th May 2023: Stating that cinema has been an extremely powerful tool for social change, ‘The Kerala Story’ director Sudipto Sen has said that his film has “awakened the civilization”

“In the last 15 days, our film (‘The Kerala Story’) has kind of awakened the whole civilization, the contemporary generation. People are discussing our film, and that is what entertainment and cinema as an art form are all about. The film has been watched by 1.5 -2 crore people in India and thousands abroad as this subject cannot be ignored,” said Sudipto Sen.

Sudipto Sen inaugurated ‘SMART Talkies’, a special preview theatre at the School of Media Activity Research and Technology (SMART) at the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Sanstha’s (MKSSS) campus in Karve Nagar on Saturday. SMART conducts B.Voc – a degree program in media and entertainment, which is affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University.

‘The Kerala Story’ producer Vipul Shah and lead actress Adah Sharma were present on the occasion along with Ravindra Deo, Chairman, MKSSS, Dr PVS Shastri, Secretary, MKSSS, Milind Lele, Trustee, MKSSS, Prof Radhika Ingale, Director, SMART and Prof Devdatta Bhingarkar, Coordinator, SMART.

The ‘SMART Talkies’ is a 32-seater state-of-the art facility, which will benefit the girl students at the facility. SMART is the only media institute in Pune to have such an in-house facility.

Sen appealed to the girls of the institute to act as the brand ambassadors for the movie and help in spreading its awareness about this sensitive issue.

“Cinema has also been an extremely powerful tool for social change. Any art form for that matter has the capacity to change the society, world,” Sen said and gave the example of European Renaissance and Russian Revolution to prove his point. He also gave the reference to Leonardo da Vinci.

Sen narrated an incident which prompted him to make ‘The Kerala Story’, which was released on May 5, 2023. “There was an incident that took place in 2014, to which I was emotionally attached. I was in Kerala and got to know about a 19-year-old girl, who was a victim of manipulative conversion. However, after marriage she understood that it was meant to be sent her to Syria. She returned and reconverted. But she was emotionally disturbed and when her parents decided to take her to their village in Kasargod district, her house was burnt,” Sen recalled.

“I later met girls and got to know about their stories. When I narrated the incidents to Vipul Shah, he said we should make a film on it. I realized it is an international issue,” Sen said.

SMART also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mitee Film Society, which will help girl students to view international cinema.

A special screening of ‘The Kerala Story’ was done for the students of MKSSS.
