Pune, 28th August 2023: Merely 20 individuals have faced fines from PMC over the last four months for the act of feeding pigeons in public areas.

In March of this year, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had declared that dispensing pigeon feed in public spaces would incur a penalty of Rs 500. However, the practical impact of this announcement has remained limited, as a substantial number of people continue to feed pigeons with disregard, influenced by unfounded superstitions and misguided beliefs.

The dedicated flying squad established by the Pune Municipal Corporation to curtail pigeon feeding activities admitted to encountering few instances of violation. The civic body’s endeavor to enforce this fine aimed to dissuade the feeding of pigeons, which are often linked to health issues such as hypersensitive pneumonia—a lung ailment—due to their droppings.

Civic officials have observed that the practice of pigeon feeding extends even to slum areas. Notably, numerous youngsters engage in group pigeon feeding activities. In some cases, informal competitions involving pigeon flight are organized for amusement.

The act of feeding grains to pigeons is intertwined with a multitude of superstitions and beliefs, including the notion that it brings prosperity and affluence. While some individuals cherish these traditions, the consequences of pigeon feeding are substantial for society. Residents have expressed their grievances, highlighting the extensive nuisances caused by these birds. Pigeons not only pose health risks but also mar balconies and terraces with their droppings.

The PMC had previously taken punitive measures against pet owners. Fines have been imposed on owners of dogs and cats for allowing their pets to defecate in open spaces. The civic administration has initiated 150 cases against offenders, amassing around Rs 30,000 in fines.

Sarika Punde from the PMC’s veterinary department mentioned, “We communicated with ward offices to monitor instances of pigeon feeding. Certain ward offices have already taken action. We are awaiting their reports.”
