Pune, 25th July 2024: Following substantial rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam catchment area, a significant volume of water was released into the Mutha River basin, causing the river to flood. This unprecedented release of water has drawn crowds of onlookers to various city bridges to witness the spectacle.

Unlike last year, when the Mutha River did not overflow despite a release of water from the dam, this year’s heavy rains have led to a dramatic rise in water levels. The river’s water levels surged after midnight on Wednesday, leading to the closure of bridges, including Jayantrao Tilak Bridge and Bhide Bridge, for traffic. In response to the flooding, the administration announced holidays for schools, colleges, and offices.

As the rain eased somewhat on Thursday afternoon, many residents ventured out to view the floodwaters. Popular spots such as the Maharshi Vitthal Ramji Shinde Bridge in Shaniwar Peth, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Bridge in Deccan Gymkhana, Chhatrapati Shivaji Bridge, Dengle Bridge in Kasba Peth, Mhatre Bridge and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Setu in Yerawada saw large crowds gathering. The old bridge area of Yerawada also attracted many spectators.

To manage the crowds and ensure safety, police deployed security personnel around the bridges. Despite the precautions, the large gatherings led many to opt for alternative modes of transportation, with increased metro travel reported. The Vanaj to Ramwadi metro route saw a notable rise in passengers seeking a vantage point to view the flood.
