Southwest Monsoon Has Withdrawn From Pune and Other Major Cities of Maharashtra : Officials

Pune 7th Oct 2023: The southwest monsoon has exited from Pune on Friday, three days ahead of its usual departure date of October 9.. This early withdrawal has been noted in around 45% region of Maharashtra and the remaining areas are likely to witness withdrawal in the next four to five days, said officials.

This year, the monsoon commenced its withdrawal from west Rajasthan on September 25 and since then, the withdrawal process has swiftly progressed across the country. Although the prediction for the monsoon’s withdrawal from Maharashtra, including Pune was around October 8 to 10, it initiated its retreat from these regions three days ahead of its schedule.

According to officials, both Maharashtra and Pune district have registered rainfall within the ‘normal category,’ with deficits of 4% and 10%, respectively. Pune city (Shivajinagar) experienced a significant 26% rainfall deficit, with 44 rainy days and a cumulative rainfall of 446.2 mm between June 1 and September 30.

According to the IMD, the southwest monsoon withdrew from all major cities in the state including Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur on Friday and the remaining areas expected to witness withdrawal in the next four to five days. Dry weather conditions are anticipated in Pune. According to IMD forecasts, Pune and Maharashtra are likely to experience ‘above normal’ temperatures in October.
