Kolkata, December 27, 2020: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former captain of the Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly, today met West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. Raj Bhavan officials said that it was a courtesy call and it has nothing to do with politics.

It is noteworthy that in the wake of the state assembly elections to be held in April-May next year, speculations are being made for Ganguly to join politics.

Sourav Ganguly reached Raj Bhavan at around 4.40 pm but did not answer any questions regarding the reasons for the meeting. The meeting between Ganguly and Dhankar lasted for about 45 minutes in the evening.

However, a media report last month claimed that Sourav Ganguly has told the BJP leadership that he neither wants to enter politics nor campaign for the party during the assembly elections. The online version of ‘The Telegraph’ had quoted the sources as saying. The report said that Sourav Ganguly has made it clear to the BJP that he does not want to join active politics and is happy with his role as a cricket administrator. Sources had also said that after Ganguly’s refusal, the party did not pressurize him to change his mind.

What did TMC bid on speculation of entry in politics?

Amid speculation about Dada’s entry into politics, the Trinamool Congress had said that if it happens then it will be very sad. When TMC MP Saugata Rai was asked on speculation about Sourav Ganguly joining politics, he said that he would not be happy if he comes into politics. Sougat Roy said that Sourav Ganguly is an icon for all Bengalis, as he is the only cricket captain from Bengal. He is also famous because of TV shows. But he has no background in politics, so Ganguly will not be able to stand here.

BJP is pushing hard to conquer Bengal

Assembly elections are due in West Bengal next year. For this, BJP is putting all its efforts. The party is sending its key leaders to Bengal. Recently, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the state, giving a major blow to TMC. He had included Shubhendu Adhikari, considered close to Mamata Banerjee, in his party. Apart from this, many TMC leaders joined the saffron party. At the same time, Home Minister Shah has also claimed in the press conference that only a face of Bengal will become the Chief Minister in Bengal from the BJP.
