Pune, 27th April 2023: The city of Pune is soon to be graced with the opening of India’s deepest underground metro station – the Shivaji Nagar Metro station. It is a sight to behold, a state-of-the-art underground marvel, and the first of its kind in the city.

After a long delay of over three-and-a-half years, the station is ready to welcome commuters. Once the commissioner of Metro Railway Safety gives the nod of approval after inspection, the station will be deemed fully operational.

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) has left no stone unturned in ensuring that the station is a visual spectacle while giving extra focus to safety and functionality. The station’s Peshwai art, featuring the major forts of Maharashtra, gives it a distinct Puneri touch. The use of vibrant hues on the escalators, signboards, warning signals, and other features makes it an extraordinarily appealing space.

Dr Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director (Administration and Public Relations) at MMRCL, emphasized that passenger and staff safety is of utmost importance. The station is under complete CCTV surveillance, and the centralised control system ensures that no mishap occurs. In case of emergencies, panic buttons have been installed at various locations, including inside the Metro train, on escalators, platforms, and at the station.

One of the unique features of the station is that cellular towers have been installed to provide better network connectivity to passengers and MMRCL staff. The station will also provide smooth and easy access to differently-abled individuals. Elevators, ticket counters, and specially designated spaces inside the train have been designed with their needs in mind.

In order to alleviate the parking concerns of commuters outside the station, Maha Metro has established a close working relationship with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and requested the allocation of designated parking areas.

The Pune Metro is a vast network of 30 stations spanning approximately 33.1 km across two corridors. Line-1, which runs from PCMC to Swargate, covers 17.4 km and has a six-km underground stretch from Shivaji Nagar to Swargate. Line-2, which spans from Vanaz to Ramwadi, covers 15.4 km and is elevated.

The Shivaji Nagar Metro station is a marvel of modern engineering, designed to cater to the needs of all passengers. The multi-modal integration of entry and exit points with the Shivaji Nagar Railway Station, PMPML bus stop, and MSRTC bus depot makes it accessible to all. It is located underneath the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus terminus near Shimla Office Chowk and will cover a distance of approximately six km between Agriculture College and Swargate.

The station’s decor and interior design are inspired by the royal Peshwas, and little elements mirroring the heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy and reign have been incorporated into the station. The station is truly a one-of-a-kind experience that showcases the perfect blend of modern engineering and traditional design.
