Dhaka/London, 5th August 2024: Sheikh Hasina, the ousted Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will not return to politics, according to her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. In a statement on Monday, Joy revealed that Hasina left the country for her safety at the family’s request.

In an interview with BBC World Service’s Newshour, Joy disclosed that his mother, who had governed Bangladesh for 15 years, was deeply disappointed and had been contemplating her resignation since Sunday. Joy emphasized that Hasina’s departure was driven by concerns for her personal safety amidst the ongoing turmoil.

Joy defended his mother’s legacy, stating that when Hasina first came to power, Bangladesh was a poor country. Under her leadership, he claimed, the country has evolved into one of Asia’s emerging economies. He also addressed criticism regarding the government’s handling of recent protests, arguing that allegations of excessive force were misplaced. “Policemen have been beaten to death,” Joy remarked. “What do you expect from the police when the mob is attacking people with such violence?”

The situation in Bangladesh remains tense as the political landscape continues to shift following Hasina’s departure.
