Scammer Who Deceived Victim Into Rs 66 Lakh Fraud Arrested From Bihar By Pune Cyber Police

Pune, 7th September 2023: The Cyber Police Station of Pune City Police has made a significant breakthrough by apprehending an accused involved in a high-value online fraud case. The victim, an employee working in the accounts department of a reputable company, was duped by the accused, who perpetrated the fraud via mobile calls.

The accused, who impersonated the director of the company and used a mobile number, engaged the victim in a series of deceptive conversations. Gaining the victim’s trust, the accused proceeded to commit a financial fraud amounting to a total of Rs 66.4 lakh on May 18, 2023, by coercing the victim to transfer the funds from the company’s account online.

A case was registered against the accused under various sections of the Information Technology Act of 2008, including Sections 66C and 66D, in addition to Sections 419, 420, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
A thorough technical investigation involving the accused’s mobile number, email ID, payment slips, and multiple bank accounts revealed the accused’s location to be in Siwan, Bihar. Subsequently, a police team from the Cyber Police Station, Pune City, was dispatched to Siwan, Bihar, to apprehend the accused.

On September 3, the Cyber Police successfully arrested one of the accused, identified as Bishal Kumar Bharat Manjhi, a 21-year-old resident of Lakarikhurd, Lakari Dargah, Siwan, Bihar. The accused has been brought to the Cyber Police Station, Pune City, where he was formally arrested. He will remain in police custody until September 11, 2023.

During the arrest, the police seized a smartphone valued at Rs 3,000 and six SIM cards from various companies from the accused. Police Inspector Chandrasekhar Sawant is conducting the ongoing investigation into the case.

The successful operation and arrest were carried out under the guidance Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ramnath Pokle, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Economic and Cyber Crimes) Srinivas Ghadge and ACP RN Raje.

The team included Senior Police Inspector Minal Supe-Patil, Chandrasekhar Sawant, Police Inspector Pramod Kharat, Police Sub Inspector Vaibhav Mane, and police personnel Ashwin Kumkar, Shirish Gawde, Pravin Rajput, Rajesh Kedari and Dattatraya Phulsundar.
