Pune, 1st June 2023: Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has recently introduced a significant safety measure for individuals entering its premises on motorcycles. Effective immediately, all bike riders must wear helmets while commuting within the university campus. This directive applies to students, faculty, staff, and any citizens visiting the university.

This decision aligns with the regulations set forth in the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. As per the Act, helmet non-compliance will be deemed a punishable offence. Therefore, it is imperative for all government and semi-government offices, municipal corporations, municipalities, schools, colleges, government officials, employees, and citizens riding two-wheelers to adhere to this safety requirement.

To ensure strict adherence to Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, the collector’s office has issued a clear order emphasizing the seriousness of any violations. In light of these directives, the university registrar, Dr Prafulla Pawar, has issued a circular urging all employees, students, and citizens to wear helmets when traveling on two-wheelers within the university premises. The circular further highlights that failure to comply with the helmet rule will result in punishment in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Dr Karbhari Kale, In-charge Vice Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, stressed the importance of prioritizing the safety of individuals, including students, professors, and non-teaching staff. Emphasizing the instructions from the collector’s office, Dr Kale highlighted the necessity of wearing helmets while using two-wheelers within the university premises to ensure the well-being of everyone present.
