New Delhi, 12th July 2023: Captain Rohit Sharma expressed his delight over having Yashasvi Jaiswal, a talented left-hander, in the Indian Test squad, emphasizing the team’s need for such a player. While Rishabh Pant is a versatile left-hander, he has been recovering from injuries sustained in a car crash last December. Nevertheless, the team can rely on Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, two quality left-handers who bat lower down the order. Jaiswal, a top-order batsman, will make his debut in the opening position alongside Rohit in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica.

During a press interaction on Tuesday, Rohit acknowledged that a few players had missed out on selection due to squad limitations, but he assured that everyone would get their chance eventually. He commended Jaiswal as a valuable addition to Indian cricket and expressed optimism for the continued success of Gill and Ruturaj, who have been performing well in recent times.

India boasts a Test squad with four opening batters, including Rohit, Shubman Gill, Jaiswal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. While Jaiswal’s inclusion confirms his spot as the opener, Gaikwad will have to wait for his opportunity. Gill, on the other hand, who has previously opened for India in Tests, has been granted his preferred batting position at No. 3. Rohit mentioned that Gill had discussed his desire to bat in that spot with Rahul Dravid and believed he could contribute better from there. The left-right combination at the top of the order is viewed as advantageous by the team, and they hope Gill performs admirably and solidifies his place in the lineup in the long term.
