Pune, 30 June 2024: In a monumental decision following India’s thrilling victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa, Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team’s captain, has confirmed his retirement from T20 internationals. The announcement came during a poignant post-match press conference where Sharma reflected on his career and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Team India to a historic triumph in Barbados.

“This was my last game as well,” Sharma revealed, echoing the earlier retirement announcement by his predecessor, Virat Kohli. “I’ve enjoyed every moment since I began playing this format. It’s a fitting time to bid adieu,” he added, amidst applause from the gathered media.

Sharma, known for his impactful leadership and prolific batting, expressed deep satisfaction in achieving his ultimate goal of winning the T20 World Cup. He dedicated the victory to coach Rahul Dravid, acknowledging Dravid’s immense contribution to Indian cricket over the past two decades.

“What Rahul has done for Indian cricket over the past 20, 25 years, winning this World Cup was the only thing left to achieve,” Sharma remarked, highlighting the pivotal role Dravid played in shaping the team’s success.

The captain also lauded his teammates, including the retiring Virat Kohli, and singled out bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah for their exceptional performances throughout the tournament. “I consider myself fortunate to have such talented players in my squad, players who consistently perform for Team India,” Sharma expressed with gratitude.

Reflecting on whether this victory marked the pinnacle of his career, Sharma affirmed, “This has to be the greatest moment. Winning games and trophies for India is what matters most to me.” His focus on team achievements over personal accolades underscored his commitment to Indian cricket’s success on the global stage.
