Pune, 5th August 2024: Anticipation is high for Robert Downey Jr’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but this time not as Iron Man. Last week, it was announced that Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom, marking his return to the MCU after his character Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame. This new role positions him as the primary antagonist, replacing Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror. Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will feature prominently in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday, stirring excitement and speculation among fans.

The central question surrounding Downey Jr.’s new role is how Marvel Studios plans to reintroduce him, given his previous iconic portrayal of Iron Man. One theory suggests that the Multiverse will enable Downey Jr. to play a variant of Tony Stark who becomes Doctor Doom. While intriguing, this theory lacks substantial evidence. However, new rumors propose a detailed character arc for Victor Von Doom in the MCU.

According to My Time To Shine Hello, Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will be a complex character rather than a straightforward villain. Similar to Thanos, Doom believes he is saving the Multiverse from incursions, making him a sympathetic villain. This character interpretation aligns with the storyline from the 2015 Secret Wars mini-series comics. As described in a tweet by My Time To Shine Hello, “Doom isn’t truly evil; he believes he’s saving the Multiverse from incursions. According to his twisted logic, the only way for the Multiverse to survive is to unify all universes in one place (Battleworld) under his rule.”

Downey Jr. confirmed his role as Doctor Doom at San Diego Comic-Con, where the Russo Brothers were announced as directors for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Initially, it was rumored that Doctor Doom would first appear in Fantastic Four: First Steps, but this has since been dismissed. Avengers: Doomsday is set for release in May 2026, promising to showcase Downey Jr. in his new, villainous role.
