Pune, February 5, 2021: A decision on widening the roads in Pune will be taken after getting the information about the number of societies on the road and the objections filed against the road widening process, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has said.

The decision will be based on the majority’s resolution living in the area, whereas the views of minorities will also be addressed. The proposal of road widening has sparked controversy, and thousands of objections have been made so far to this proposal. The administration has started hearing about the registered objections.

The city is working on a proposal to widen six-meter-wide roads to nine meters and allow transferable development rights (TDR) or additional Floor Space Index (FSI).

Standing Committee Chairman Hemant Rasne said, “In the first phase, Municipal Corporation had proposed to widen 350 roads. Considering the objections raised on those roads, a separate chart needs to be prepared, mentioning the number of objections raised, number of societies and houses on that road. The priority will be given the majority decision. If there are fifty societies on the road, only two have raised objections; then the decision will favor the majority residents’ conclusion.”

“Using TDR or additional FSI is prohibited on roads six meters wide in the city. This has hampered the redevelopment of old societies. The decision has been taken to pave the way for their redevelopment. If a street society does not want TDR or additional FSI, their views will also be considered, “Rasne added.
