Mumbai, 14th August 2024: Ram Gopal Varma, known for collaborating with Amitabh Bachchan in films like Sarkar, recently gave a cheeky nod to the megastar’s long-standing career. Sharing the cover of a now-defunct magazine that predicted Amitabh’s career downfall in 1990, RGV posted on social media. The filmmaker shared a 1990 issue of Illustrated Weekly, which featured a picture of Amitabh in a beige outfit with the word “FINISHED!” emblazoned across it. In his caption, Varma quipped, “34 years ago, ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY declared this, and now ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY is finished, while ⁦@SrBachchan continues to soar.” He added biceps and laughing emojis for emphasis.

The internet was taken aback by RGV’s unexpected praise for Amitabh, especially considering his 2011 criticism of the star for starring in Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap. One social media user remarked, “A positive tweet from Ram Gopal Varma? That’s rare!” Others shared similar admiration, with one commenting, “Discipline and dedication can keep you at the top year after year. @SrBachchan is living proof of that.” Another added, “RGV, what a timely observation!”

Amitabh’s Career Journey: From Downfall to Resurrection

Amitabh Bachchan, famous for his portrayal of the Angry Young Man in the 1970s, experienced a career downturn in the 1980s. The same year the magazine deemed him “finished,” his film Agneepath was released. Although the movie was not well-received at the time, it earned Amitabh a National Award the following year and eventually became a cult classic, inspiring a 2012 remake starring Hrithik Roshan.

Amitabh faced several box office failures in the 1990s, but his fortunes turned around with the success of Kaun Banega Crorepati and Mohabbatein in the early 2000s. Since then, he has remained a powerful figure in the industry. His latest film, Kalki 2898 AD, crossed ₹1,000 crore at the box office, and he is set to appear in Section 84 and Vettaiyan.
