Pune, 21st December 2023: Urokul Hospital, based in Pune, has pioneered a groundbreaking approach to prostate gland treatment, marking the first-of-its-kind introduction of ‘Rezum Therapy’ in India.

Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni, a distinguished urologist and the Founder of Urokul Hospital, disclosed this innovative non-surgical procedure during a press conference held at Urokul Hospital.

Speaking at the conference on Thursday, Dr. Sanjay Kulkarni highlighted the significance of ‘Rezum Therapy’ as a revolutionary alternative to traditional prostate surgeries. The procedure, lasting a mere 10 minutes compared to the conventional two-hour operation, boasts a complication-free experience for patients. The technology is now available at the Urokul-Kulkarni Uro Surgery Institute in Baner.

Dr. Kulkarni compared the conventional ‘Transurethral Resection of the Prostate’ (TURP) surgery, requiring a two to three-day hospital stay, an hour-long operation, and costing around 2 to 2.5 lakhs. He emphasized the associated pain and loss of post-sexual intercourse ejaculatory ability that patients traditionally endured.

Explaining the benefits of ‘Rezum Therapy,’ Dr. Kulkarni outlined the non-surgical process, involving the removal of prostatic tissues with Water Vapor Therapy. This outpatient procedure is performed under local anesthesia, allowing patients to be discharged the same day after a brief 2-4 hour observation period. The cost of the ‘Rezum Therapy’ is approximately 4 lakhs, a noteworthy investment in the patient’s well-being.

The healing process begins over a few weeks, as the patient’s natural response absorbs the treated prostate tissue, leading to the shrinkage of the prostate. Relief from obstructive symptoms due to an enlarged prostate is typically experienced within two weeks, with maximum benefits realized within three months, Dr. Kulkarni added.

Highlighting the success rate of over 80 percent, Dr. Jyotsna Kulkarni, the first laparoscopy woman in India and a prominent figure in the medical community, emphasized the versatility of ‘Rezum Therapy.’ It can effectively treat patients with various prostate sizes, addressing retention of urine issues due to prostate problems. A significant advantage of ‘Rezum Therapy’ is its preservation of ejaculation, making it particularly beneficial for young patients and those wishing to maintain this aspect of sexual health.
