Kolkata, 5th September 2024: On Thursday, Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Mazumdar alleged that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had ordered renovations near the seminar hall where a doctor was discovered raped and murdered. Mazumdar shared a purported letter, allegedly signed by Ghosh, authorizing the renovation work.

The letter, dated August 10—just one day after the victim’s death—was reportedly issued by Ghosh to the executive engineers of various PWD departments in Kolkata. It requested urgent repairs to the attached toilets in the on-duty doctors’ rooms, citing deficiencies and referring to a meeting with health department officials.

Mazumdar criticized the police for denying allegations from colleagues and protesters about possible tampering with the crime scene. The authenticity of the letter could not be independently verified by HT.

Following the revelation of the renovation order, the BJP-led opposition accused the authorities of trying to alter the evidence at the crime scene.

The controversy surrounding Ghosh intensified after the victim’s family claimed that hospital officials initially suggested the woman had died by suicide. The victim’s father reported having to wait over three hours to view his daughter’s body. The Supreme Court has also questioned the Bengal government regarding the delay in filing an FIR with appropriate murder charges.

Earlier this week, Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on charges of financial misconduct, including the illegal sale of corpses.

The doctor was found raped and murdered in the seminar hall where she was resting during a 36-hour shift. Police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civil volunteer, in connection with the crime.
