Pune, 5th July 2024: The Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board has successfully exported 3,397 tonnes of mangoes, worth Rs 55.89 crore, to various countries this season. The mangoes were shipped from three export facility centres in Vashi, Mumbai, and one in Baramati, Pune.

According to information provided by the Board of Trade, varieties such as Hapus from Konkan, Kesar from Marathwada, and Baiganpalli from Karnataka were exported on a large scale to destinations including Australia, America, Britain, Europe, and Southeast Asian countries.

India exports about 25,000 tonnes of mangoes annually, with major varieties including Hapus, Kesar, Rajapuri from Maharashtra, and Baiganpalli, Himayat, Dasheri, and Chausa from other states. To meet the demands of various countries, the Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board has established facility centres for processing mangoes for export by both sea and air. The exported mangoes must meet strict quality standards, ensuring they are free from diseases and insect infestations, have no spots or scratches, and are uniformly packed.

Last year, the Board exported 2,200 tonnes of mangoes worth Rs 36 crore. This year, exports increased by 1,197 tonnes. In addition to developed countries, mangoes from the states are also exported to Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bangladesh without any processing. Last year, about 20,000 tonnes of mangoes were exported from India, with Maharashtra accounting for 18,000 tonnes. This year, it is anticipated that total exports from the country will reach 25,000 tonnes.

Despite high air freight rates, exports through the Board’s facilities to developed countries have increased significantly compared to last year. Mango growers now have better access to markets in developed countries due to pre-registration, quality production, and initiatives by the Board of Marketing. This sets the stage for a substantial increase in exports in the future, according to Sanjay Kadam, Executive Director of the Maharashtra State Board of Agricultural Marketing, Pune.
