Real Money Gaming Apps to Stay on Play Store, AIGF Criticizes Google’s Move

Pune, 22nd June 2024: Google has indefinitely extended the grace period for existing online real money gaming apps on the Play Store, leading to accusations of arbitrary and anti-competitive behavior from small gaming companies and startups. The grace period for Digital Fantasy Sports (DFS) and rummy apps will continue until the next update of the Play Store policy, significantly impacting Indian startups. This decision has intensified concerns within the Indian gaming community.

Google’s decision to extend the grace period for real money gaming apps has stirred controversy. The initial pilot program for DFS and rummy apps ended in September 2023, but the extension will now continue indefinitely. The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has voiced strong objections, labeling the move as ‘arbitrary’ and ‘anti-competitive.’

AIGF has called for government intervention through a digital competition bill to ensure a level playing field in the app market. This demand echoes the previous antitrust ruling by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against Google regarding in-app payment practices.

AIGF’s criticism highlights the uneven playing field created by the extension. A spokesperson stated, “Google’s decision unfairly benefits established players while hampering the growth of emerging startups. We urge Google to adopt a more inclusive policy that supports the broader gaming ecosystem.”

Google has indicated its intention to develop a comprehensive framework for real money games in the future. However, the indefinite grace period leaves Indian gaming companies in a precarious position. Industry experts argue that the lack of a clear timeline for policy updates adds uncertainty to the market.

The indefinite extension of the grace period directly impacts the competitive landscape for Indian startups in the gaming industry. While Google works on its long-term policy, the immediate effect is a market advantage for existing large players, potentially stifling innovation and competition.

As the Indian gaming sector awaits further updates, the call for a balanced and fair approach grows louder. The need for regulatory oversight and transparent policies is more critical than ever to ensure that all players, big or small, have equal opportunities to thrive in this dynamic market.
