Mumbai/Pune, 18th July 2024: RRP Electronics Chairman Rajendra Chodankar has announced that Maharashtra’s first semiconductor chip manufacturing plant will become operational on 16th September. This Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility, inaugurated in Navi Mumbai in March, marks a significant milestone for the state.

Chodankar made this announcement at the Semiconductor Eco-System Conference organized by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries, and Agriculture (MCCIA) on Senapati Bapat Road in Pune. Semiconductor chips, a critical component in electronics, are currently imported from Taiwan and South Korea. Efforts are underway to manufacture these chips in India, with Maharashtra’s first OSAT plant set to be fully operational by September.

Chodankar said, “In India, there are factories in Chennai and Gujarat that manufacture semiconductors through the OSAT system. This will be the first project in Maharashtra. The state government has provided significant subsidies, and this project is being set up in a 45,000-square-foot area. We are all working hard to implement the project, and it will be operational by September.” He added that semiconductor wafers would be supplied from these facilities, providing opportunities for self-employment in the state.

What is OSAT Technology?

Semiconductor wafers are the raw material for developing semiconductor chips. Manufacturing semiconductor wafers requires highly complex and sophisticated foundries, which are currently unavailable in India. Some large companies are collaborating to set up such foundries. In the meantime, factories developing semiconductor chips using wafers are being established in key cities across the country. This facility will now be available in Maharashtra, reducing dependence on foreign countries by at least 25%. In the future, this will foster the development of technology and the confidence to set up semiconductor foundries, thereby increasing employment opportunities in the country.

Rajendra Chodankar, Chairman of RRP Electronics Limited, stated, “The first semiconductor manufacturing plant in the state will become operational in September through OSAT technology. The state government is providing us with space at Talodaya, where we intend to set up a foundry to develop semiconductor wafers.”
