Mumbai/Pune, 4th July 2024: Sassoon General Hospital in Pune is advancing its plans to establish a dedicated government cancer hospital on its premises, enhancing its reputation for providing high-quality healthcare services. Medical Education Minister of Maharashtra, Hasan Mushrif, announced during the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly’s monsoon session that the final stages of this project are progressing well, with a decision pending on securing the necessary space in front of Sassoon Hospital.

MLA Bhimrao Tapkir raised questions about Sassoon General Hospital during the session, which saw participation from opposition leaders and various representatives. Mushrif assured that bariatric surgery specialists are now available at Sassoon Hospital, ensuring adequate care for newborns, with plans to expand the intensive care unit capacity. An upcoming hospital inspection will include a meeting with Pune City’s elected representatives to assess current facilities and discuss improvements.

Mushrif emphasized that medical college and hospital vacancies are being filled through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), with all Group ‘C’ vacancies already addressed. District Collectors have been empowered to handle Group ‘D’ vacancies on a contractual basis locally. Additionally, the authority to procure medicines at medical college hospitals now rests with the principals, ensuring prompt procurement in urgent situations.

Regarding healthcare services, Sassoon Hospital will soon verify arrangements for dialysis and is working towards introducing liver transplant treatments, mirroring services available in Mumbai, within Pune’s government hospitals.
