Pune’s Rutuja Varhade Tops NDA Entrance Exam Among Girls, Secures 3rd Rank Overall

Pune, 15th April 2025: Rutuja Varhade, a student from Pune, has topped the National Defence Academy (NDA) entrance examination among female candidates across the country, securing the third rank in the overall merit list. The results were recently declared by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The NDA, which trains cadets for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, began admitting women in 2021 following a landmark Supreme Court ruling mandating equal opportunities for women in the armed forces. The first batch of women cadets is scheduled to graduate this May.
This year, over 1.5 lakh female candidates applied for the exam. Among them, Rutuja emerged as the highest-ranking girl in the country. Her achievement has brought pride to her family, city, and educators.
Both of Rutuja’s parents are teachers and have been strong pillars of support throughout her journey. She credited her success to their encouragement and the guidance of her mentors.
“I’ve dreamt of joining the armed forces since Class 9,” Rutuja shared. “From Class 11, I started preparing seriously for the NDA entrance exam. I’m proud to have reached this milestone and look forward to serving the nation as an Army pilot.”
To pursue her dream of becoming a pilot, Rutuja also cleared the Computerized Pilot Selection System (CPSS) test, which is mandatory for candidates aspiring to join the flying branch.
Rutuja’s achievement not only highlights her dedication but also reflects the growing presence and aspirations of young women in India’s defence services.
