Pune’s Defence Institutions: Shaping India’s Military Future

Pune, 29th March 2025: Pune, the Headquarters of the Indian Army’s Southern Command, is home to a distinguished array of prestigious institutions, that have shaped India’s military landscape. These include the National Defence Academy (NDA), College of Military Engineering (CME), Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Military Intelligence Training School and Depot (MINTSD), Army Institute of Physical Training (AIPT), and the Bombay Engineering Group (BEG), among others. Together they serve as pillars of excellence, fostering leadership, innovation and cuttingedge research in defence and security affairs.

The city of Pune, with its unique blend of tradition, intellect, and patriotism, has always embraced these institutions with reverence and pride. Punekars, including a large serving and vibrant veteran community, share an emotional and historic bond with these establishments, recognizing their unmatched contribution to national defence and character-building. Puneis often hailed as the “Cradle of Military Excellence”.

These Institutions not only serve as the bedrock of professional training for the Indian Armed Forces, but also enrich the city’s social and cultural fabric. Serving officers and veterans settled in Pune, many of whom are alumni of these institutions, continue to inspire the younger generation and actively contribute to civic life, mentoring youth and reinforcing patriotic values.

Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, PVSM, AVSM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief,Southern Command recently visited AFMC and inaugurated “Anusandhan” a Hall of Fame showcasing research, innovations and scientific achievements of undergraduate students. The Army Commander also visited College of Military Engineering (CME) and commended technology driven innovative engineering & advanced training initiatives. He reviewed key upgrades in Geo-Information Sciences, survey software and drone training. The Army Commander appreciated the institution’s efforts in fostering innovation.
