Pune, 24th August 2024: This year, Maharashtra has experienced substantial rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Pune today and tomorrow, with an orange alert expected on 26th August. The heavy rains across the district have significantly increased water levels in nearly all dams, leading to additional water releases and raising concerns of potential flooding for the third time this year.

The IMD issues alerts to indicate the severity of weather conditions: a Red Alert signifies extreme weather with the potential for significant disruption and damage; an Orange Alert warns of heavy rainfall or severe weather that could disrupt normal life; and a Yellow Alert indicates the likelihood of adverse weather, such as thunderstorms or moderate rainfall, with possible minor impacts.

Heavy rains, which had paused for a few days, returned last week. Pune has been under a red alert since today, a status that will continue until tomorrow. An orange alert is anticipated for Monday, followed by yellow alerts for the subsequent two days. This indicates that significant rainfall is expected over the next few days, with the heaviest downpours forecast for today and tomorrow, gradually decreasing thereafter.

In addition to Pune District, the districts of Satara, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, and Raigad are also under red alerts today. Meanwhile, Kolhapur, Thane, Palghar, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Jalna, Amravati, and Akola are under orange alerts. Nashik, Dhule, Buldhana, and Parbhani are on yellow alert, while the remaining districts are not expected to experience significant rainfall.

Tomorrow, Pune District, Satara, and Raigad will continue to be under red alerts.
