Pune 15th Sept 2023: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Corporation Limited (MSEDCL) has appealed to the Gram Panchayats and Municipal Councils in Western Maharashtra including Pune to keep street lights off during the day time as it is unnecessary wasting the power supply. The MSEDCL officials have warned of action against local governing bodies for waste of electricity.

“Local self-governing bodies are responsible for public safety and street lighting. Electricity connections and maintenance are provided by MSEDCL for these street lights. However, in many places, the streetlights in the jurisdiction of municipal corporations and gram panchayats are being turned on during the daytime. This wastage of electricity, especially during the day, results in a significant loss. With the increasing demand for streetlights in the country, the purchase rate of electricity has been rising day by day” MSEDCL said.

“The MSEDCL has taken note of unnecessary waste of electricity by the local self-governing bodies by keeping streetlights on during the day time. The local bodies should instruct officials to ensure that the streetlights are on only after evening till morning. The Regional Director of MSEDCL has instructed engineers of Pune, Solapur, Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur districts to disconnect power supply of such street poles where the power supply is wasted by the local governing bodies” the officials said.

MSEDCL has appealed to the local governing bodies to install independent or auto on-off switches to such streetlights to save electricity. Due to the shortage of rainfall this year, there is a possibility of water shortage in the state. This will also have an impact on electricity manufacturing. The MSEDCL is already trying hard to meet the demand for electricity in the state for which additional electricity is being purchased, said officials.
