Pune: War-Level Cleanup and Relief Work by PMC Following Last Week’s Floods

Pune, 29th July 2024: In response to the recent floods in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched an extensive operation to clean the city and provide relief to flood victims. The cleanup efforts aim to remove garbage and mud from affected areas, and the corporation is also implementing measures to prevent disease outbreaks in the aftermath of the flooding.

The heavy rains on the morning of July 25 led to severe flooding in several low-lying areas of the city. The affected areas include Sainath Nagar, Vadgaon Sheri, Shantinagar, Indiranagar, Chimagarden, Yojana Poultry Farm, Vishrant Society, Yashwantnagari, Kalas, Tadiwala Road, Patil Estate, Pulachi Wadi, Bhim Nagar Visarjan Ganpati Ghat, Balewadi, Adarsh Nagar Bopodi, Kothrud Bavdhan (Wards No. 10, 11, 12), Erandwane, Shahu Colony, Tapodham, Rajput Slum crematorium, Shivane, Uttamnagar Mashe Ali, Bazar Samiti, Indira Colony, Bhimnagar, Kondhwe Dhwade, Ekta Nagar, Nimbuj Nagar, Sahakarnagar, Dhankawadi, Katraj, Ambegaon Budruk, Jambhulwadi, Kolewadi, Mangdewadi, Bhilarewadi, riverside, Ashtabhuja, Apte Ghat, Tilak Bridge, and Omkareshwar Temple.

Under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, the primary focus was on rescue operations due to the emergency situation. Eight boats from PMC were deployed for rescue missions. Additionally, coordinated efforts with the district administration saw the deployment of three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, each consisting of two units with 30 personnel and four boats. An army column, comprising 80 personnel, doctors, engineers, and two boats, also joined the rescue efforts.

Temporary shelters were established at 26 locations for displaced residents, where food and snacks were provided by PMC in collaboration with various social organizations and individuals. The PMC’s Water Supply Department has made 68 drinking water tankers available at these shelters. Medical assistance was also provided as needed.

In terms of supplies, the PMC distributed 2,700 blankets, 5,000 sheets, 7,000 bed sheets, and plastic buckets to the flood victims, ensuring that basic necessities were met during this crisis.
