Pune, 17th October 2024: The inaugural ceremony of GARIMA, a three-month karate training program organised by the Physical Education & Sports Section and the Centre for Women Empowerment ( VU Saksham), was held at Vishwakarma University on Monday, 14th October. The program aims to empower women through self-defense training, promoting techniques like karate in response to the growing need for personal safety in society.

The event began with a congratulatory speech from Vice-President Dr. Vasudev Gade, who commended the organisers for the successful launch. He highlighted the importance of fitness and self-defense in today’s world, stating, “In a world where crimes against women are on the rise, the need for this type of training is crucial. Fitness plays a vital role, and this program will provide long-term benefits by equipping women with effective self-defense techniques. Karate, in particular, is essential for building strength and confidence.”

Dr. Gade further noted that 68 students have already enrolled in the program, expressing hope that this number will increase. He emphasized, “By the time these girls graduate from VU, they will carry the confidence that will support them in their future. Vishwakarma University is committed to empowering its female staff and students, and we will always stand by them.”

Following Dr. Gade’s address, Dr. Pashmina Doshi, Director of the Centre for Women Empowerment, took the stage and shared the significance of GARIMA, which stands for dignity, pride, and respect. She expressed her gratitude to the university for approving the program, stating, “This training is the need of the hour. It will take place three times a week over the course of three months. The primary goal is to empower these girls to ensure their own safety, so they don’t have to rely on anyone else for protection.”

The event concluded with a speech from the coach, Mr. Rajesh Solanki, who has 40 years of experience and numerous national, state, and district-level accolades in karate. He emphasized the broader impact of learning karate, saying, “Karate helps you not only develop skills and strength but also build a personality that stays with you for life. Karate, meaning ’empty-hand defense,’ is something everyone should learn, as it enhances both strength and self-defense abilities. Throughout the training, I’ll be teaching punches, blocks, and kicks—so get ready to acquire new skills.”
