Pune: Violent Clash Erupts Between Gangs Inside Yerwada Jail, Inmate Seriously Injured
Yerwada, 11th May 2023: A violent clash erupted between two gangs inside Yerwada Central Jail, resulting in a serious injury to one of the inmates. The incident occurred when members of the Marne gang attacked a fellow prisoner, striking him on the head.
Yerwada Jail houses a significant number of criminals, approximately 700 to 800, belonging to different criminal factions, who are housed in various barracks within the sprawling facility. These criminals are either awaiting trial or serving judicial custody for their respective crimes.
The altercation initially broke out on Wednesday afternoon during a game of carom between two inmates. Prison guards swiftly intervened, dispersing the fight and confining all inmates to a nearby barrack.
However, tensions escalated once again later in the night. While the injured inmate was being examined, the rival gang members engaged in another heated dispute. This time, a member of the opposing gang viciously struck the victim on the head, inflicting severe injuries. Prompt action was taken by the prison guards to separate the fighting factions, and all involved criminals were relocated to different barracks within the facility.
Rani Bhosle, the superintendent of Yerwada Jail, assured that the injured prisoner received immediate medical attention and has now been placed in a separate barrack, along with the necessary security measures.
