Pune, 23rd June 2022: On the recommendation of the Election Commission of India, the Representation of the People Act, 1950 has been amended under the Election Law Act 2021 by the Union Government, Ministry of Law and Justice.

According to Section 23 of the same, voters have to voluntarily provide Aadhaar information to the Registration Officer for verification and linking with details in the voter list. Collector and District Election Officer Dr Rajesh Deshmukh has appealed to the voters to fill form 6 B for submitting the Adhaar number.

The said amendments will be implemented from August 1, 2022. After the amendments in the above Act and Rules, the Electoral Registration Officer is statutorily authorized to obtain Aadhaar number from every person on the electoral roll in the prescribed format. Every person who is on the electoral roll on or before April 1, 2023, can provide an Aadhaar number. For this, the Election Commission of India has decided to start a program to obtain Aadhaar numbers from voters in a time-bound manner.

The purpose of Aadhaar collection from voters is to establish the identity of the voters and verify the entries in the electoral roll and identify the registration of the same person’s name in more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency. The purpose of the said program is to comply with the legal provisions. However, the commission also clarified that submission of Aadhaar numbers is voluntary on the part of the voters.

Application no. 6B will be available on the Election Commission of India website. Application No. 6B will also be available through NVSP, and VHA for voters to fill Aadhaar numbers online. Also, printed copies of this application form will be made available.

After filling the form 6 B, voters can apply for self-certification by filling Aadhaar number online through a portal/app developed by the Election Commission of India through an online application number. Aadhaar can be authenticated through OTP received on a mobile number registered with UIDAI. However, if there is a difference in the details, the authentication is likely to fail.

If the voter does not want to self-authenticate or if the above authentication fails, the voter can apply online through application no. 6B can be paid along with suitable documents.

Providing an Aadhaar number is purely voluntary and the purpose of obtaining an Aadhaar number is to validate the entries in the electoral roll and provide better electoral services to the voters in future. If a voter does not have an Aadhaar number then the concerned voter should submit any one of the eleven alternative documents mentioned in the form 6B.

No entry in the Electoral Roll shall be excluded on the ground of the inability of any existing voter in the Electoral Roll to furnish/provide an Aadhaar number. Collector Dr Rajesh Deshmukh has appealed that the voters should fill and submit the sample application form 6B to submit the Aadhaar number.
