Pune, 27th August 2023: In a significant move aimed at establishing Marathi not only as a language of knowledge but also as a language integral to industries and employment, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has taken the pioneering initiative to mandate Marathi as a compulsory subject in all university-level faculties. This progressive decision marks Pune University as the first in the state to implement such a comprehensive approach.

The Board of Studies convened a meeting, chaired by Dr. Sandeep Sangle, to discuss this transformative step. The backdrop for this decision is the growing concern over the erosion of mother tongues in education and social contexts. To address this issue and to amplify the reach of the Marathi language, the proposal to incorporate Marathi as a mandatory subject across all college-level faculties was earnestly deliberated. The proponents assert that integrating the teaching of the mother tongue at the university level could pave the way for Marathi to become a language deeply intertwined with business, industry, and knowledge.

The unanimous consensus in the meeting led to the resolution of making Marathi a compulsory subject. “The Board of Marathi Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University is steadfast in its call to integrate Marathi literature and language across all faculties. The board is committed to maintaining ongoing dialogues with governmental authorities and experts in this realm. The rationale is clear: by ensuring Marathi education across all disciplines, we can lay the groundwork for the mother tongue to flourish as a language of opportunity,” affirmed Dr. Sandeep Sangle, President of the Board of Marathi Studies at Savitribai Phule Pune University.
