Pune, 28th May 2024: A student at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and representative of the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) faces sexual harassment charges filed by a fellow student.

The victim, also enrolled at the university, accused the student of a two-month-long harassment campaign, prompting her to file a complaint. An FIR was registered at Chaturshringi Police Station on the evening of May 21.

According to the FIR, the accused allegedly approached the victim on campus on at least two occasions and sent her inappropriate text messages. The case was brought to public attention by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday, who demanded the student’s expulsion from the university.

In response, NSUI condemned the incident and suspended the accused’s primary membership. NSUI Maharashtra President Amir Shaikh stated, “NSUI has zero tolerance for such incidents. I have spoken with the victim and assured her of full support. We will take strict action if any other NSUI members are found involved.”

SPPU Registrar-in-Charge Vijay Khare commented, “We will provide full support for any necessary investigation. The university’s Internal Complaints Committee did not receive a complaint from the student prior to this. Since the matter was directly reported to the police, it will be handled accordingly. The accused student’s enrollment will end in June as it is.”
