Pune: Two Policemen Among Three Booked For Abetment Of Suicide Of Loan Guarantor

Nana Peth, 13th September 2022: A man allegedly died by suicide after being harassed by police who extorted money for not arresting him. He was a loan guarantor, and the person who had taken the loan had refused to pay the loan amount.

The deceased has been identified as Rajendra alias Raju Raut, a resident of Nana Peth, Pune. He was found hanging at his home at 6 am yesterday.

Based on a complaint from his daughter Vaishnavi (23), an FIR has been registered by the Samarath Police Station against Kiran Bhatlawande, a resident of Manjari Budruk ASI Bhagyawan Dnyandev Nikam and Head Constable Sachin Ramchandra Barkade, both posted at thesame police station.

As per the FIR, Raut’s friend Bhatlawande had taken a loan against a Tata Sumo Victa from Raghubir Business Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad. Raut was the loan guarantor. However, Bhatlawande defaulted on payment of loan installments. As the company filed a case, the court issued summons. The two policemen who would come to give him the warrant, extorted Rs 8,000 on several occasions to not arrest him.

“My father requested Bhatlawande to repay the loan amount, but he refused. Fed up with the harassment, my father died by suicide,” Vaishnavi stated in her complaint.

Police have booked the accused for offence under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Assistant Police Inspector Mali is investigating the case.
