Pune, 26th June 2024: Two cases of Zika virus have been reported in Pune, raising alarm as the city prepares for the Ashadi Palkhi Celebrations.

A 46-year-old doctor and his 13-year-old daughter in the Erandwane area of Kothrud have been diagnosed with Zika. The symptoms include fever and body aches.

The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes and poses a higher risk to pregnant women, who need to take extra precautions. While Zika is not typically life-threatening, it can significantly impact women. Climate change has also led to an increase in other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.

What is Zika Virus?
Zika virus disease is a mild illness caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Approximately 80% of patients show no symptoms, while others may experience fever, joint pain, body aches, headaches, red eyes, vomiting, malaise, and rashes. The health department has urged that while surveys for Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases are conducted, COVID-19 surveys and vaccinations should not be neglected.

Preventive Measures:
– Keep mosquitoes out of the house and maintain cleanliness.
– Use mosquito nets.
– Avoid storing water for long periods and keep it covered.
– The disease is not contagious, but a mosquito can transmit the virus from one person to another.
– Women are at higher risk.
– Install nets on windows and doors.
– Consult a doctor before travelling if you have conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or immunity disorders.
– If fever persists for two days after travelling, seek medical advice immediately.
