Pune: Two Men Swept Away by Strong Currents in Pune’s Mutha River and Ambil Odha

Pune, 26th July 2024: Two individuals were swept away by the strong currents of the Mutha River and Ambil Odha in Pune city yesterday. A young man was carried away by the unpredictable flow of water in the Ambil Odha near Lake Town Housing Society in the Bibwewadi area.

Another person was washed away in the Mutha Riverbed near the Ashtabhuja Durga Devi Temple in Narayan Peth. Police and fire brigade personnel continued their search until late into the night.

The young man swept away in the Ambil Odha has been identified as Akshay Sanjay Salunke, age 26. The identity of the other person, estimated to be around 50 years old, remains unknown.

Originally from Sangli, Akshay was employed at a washing centre near Lake Town Housing Society. He was swept away while inspecting the water near Ambil Odha, as he did not anticipate its strength. Firefighter Sanjay Ramteke and other personnel searched the area of the stream, while Tandel Manish Bombale and the team from Gangadham Fire Station attempted to search through the mesh on the Padmavati Bridge. Despite their efforts, Akshay was not found.

In a separate incident, another person who attempted to swim in the Mutha Riverbed near the Ashtabhuja Durga Devi Temple in Narayan Peth was also swept away by the strong current. A search operation was conducted by police and fire brigade personnel, but no trace was found, according to Deepali Bhujbal, Senior Police Inspector of Vishrambaug Police Station.
