Pune: Two Arrested in Bopdev Ghat Gang Rape Case; Identification Test Scheduled

Pune, 16th October 2024: Police have seized the sticks and clothing used by the arrested accused in the Bopdev Ghat rape case to threaten the victim and her friend. The accused has been remanded in judicial custody for fourteen days, reserving the right to police custody for an identification test. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) A.A. Kulkarni issued this order.

The arrested accused has been identified as Chandrakumar Raviprasad Kanojia (20), a resident of Undri and a native of Dindori, Madhya Pradesh. His accomplice in this crime, Akhtar Sheikh, was detained by the Pune Police’s Crime Branch from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh on Monday (14th October).

The incident of gang rape took place on 3rd October at Table Point in Bopdev Ghat. A week later, the police arrested Kanojia. The court remanded him in police custody for three days. As his term expired, Kanojia was produced before the Pune Cantonment court in Wanwadi on Tuesday (15th October).

DNA samples, along with medical samples of blood, hair, nails, and sputum from the accused, have been sent for examination. Before they gang-raped the young woman, it was reported that they were roaming in Bopdev Ghat with the intention of robbery. The police informed the court that the accused showed the location of the crime, and the seized items, including sticks and clothing, were recovered from there.

Police indicated that an identification test would be conducted in front of the victim and her friend for the arrested accused Kanojia.

For this, investigating officer Police Inspector Yuvraj Hande and public prosecutor Amrapali Kasture requested that the accused be remanded in judicial custody for fourteen days while retaining the right of police custody. Adv. Rahul Lonandkar represented the accused.
