Mundhwa, 15th April 2025: In a bid to decongest one of Pune’s busiest intersections, the city traffic police have implemented experimental traffic diversions at Mundhwa Chowk, including the shutdown of the traffic signal.

The decision comes after increasing complaints about daily bottlenecks caused by signal delays at the chowk, which handles a high volume of vehicles heading towards Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, and the Nagar-Solapur highways.

Following a joint inspection by Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende, officials decided to switch off the signal and introduce new movement patterns to improve vehicular flow.

“We’ve implemented temporary diversions to monitor their impact on traffic movement and overall speed,” said DCP Zende. The new pattern aims to streamline traffic without the need for long signal halts.

Key changes under the trial plan include:
From Ghorpadi via Keshavnagar to Manjri or Hadapsar: Vehicles must turn left at Mundhwa Chowk, then take a right U-turn at Mundhwa to continue.
For buses and tempos: Larger vehicles should skip the U-turn and go via Sainath Nagar, taking a U-turn from there instead.
From Keshavnagar to Kharadi and Koregaon Park: Vehicles must turn left at the chowk and then take a right U-turn near the Mundhwa railway flyover.
For heavy four-wheelers: Drivers are advised to avoid the underpass and use the flyover’s right-turn route.

These experimental changes are being monitored closely and may be revised based on traffic response. Authorities aim to find a sustainable solution for smoother traffic movement at Mundhwa Chowk, which remains a critical junction for daily commuters in East Pune.
