Pune, 25th July 2024: Due to intense rainfall, the Khadakwasla Dam is set to significantly increase its water discharge into the Mutha River basin. The dam has already released 35,574 cusecs of water since early this morning, but this figure was reduced to 15,000 cusecs at 10:30 AM today. Starting at 6 PM, the discharge will be raised to 40,000 cusecs.

Shweta Kurhade, Executive Engineer at the Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, explained, “The adjustment in discharge is in response to the heavy rainfall we’ve been experiencing. While we initially released 35,574 cusecs of water between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, we will increase this to 40,000 cusecs starting at 6 PM. The average rainfall in the dam area has been about 100 mm, with over 300 mm recorded in the ghat regions.”

Kurhade noted that further adjustments might be necessary depending on ongoing rainfall conditions. She emphasized the need for heightened vigilance in certain areas of the city and advised residents to avoid these locations.

“The Pune Municipal Corporation must be proactive and implement necessary precautions to handle the situation effectively,” Kurhade added.

Residents are urged to stay updated with the latest information and to avoid traveling to areas that may be impacted by the increased water discharge.
