Pune Theft Accused Sachin Gaikwad Dies After Falling Unconscious in Police Lockup; CID to Investigate

Pune, 12th August 2024: The accused arrested for theft in Pune fell unconscious and became dizzy while in police custody. The accused, identified as Sachin Ashok Gaikwad (age 47, resident of Mundhwa), was admitted for treatment due to dizziness but died during treatment. Following his death in custody, the investigation has been handed over to the Crime Investigation Department (CID).

Gaikwad, arrested on theft charges, was locked up at Vishrambaug Police Station. According to police reports, Gaikwad and Manohar Ramesh Mane (age 35) were arrested by Parvati police in connection with the theft case. They were arrested on 7th July and were placed in custody at Vishrambaug-Faraskhana Police Stations. The court had ordered their remand until 10th August.

On the evening of 9th August, Gaikwad became dizzy in the lockup. The duty police informed senior officers, and he was immediately transferred by ambulance to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Sassoon General Hospital. A preliminary examination indicated that Gaikwad died due to a cerebral haemorrhage. He underwent surgery on 10th August, but the doctor reported that he passed away during the evening.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Sambhaji Kadam stated, “Gaikwad’s family was aware of his condition. He died during treatment on Saturday evening. The investigation has been transferred to the CID.”
