Baramati, 4th June 2024: The battle of Baramati in Maharashtra was highly significant, as the reputations of senior leaders Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar were at stake in the Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency.

Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra, represented his faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) against Sharad Pawar’s daughter and three-time MP of Baramati, Supriya Sule. Ajit Pawar’s substantial contributions to Baramati’s success and the emotional connection the people of Baramati have with Sharad Pawar made this family battle even more intense. However, Supriya Sule managed to win against her sister-in-law, Sunetra Pawar, by a significant margin of 1 lakh votes.

After Ajit Pawar left the NCP, led by his uncle Sharad Pawar, with a majority of its MLAs to join the government with Shinde’s Sena and the BJP and took the oath of Deputy Chief Minister, this election was crucial for both Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar to assert their influence. However, the veteran uncle prevailed this time. Ajit Pawar suffered a significant setback in his stronghold, Baramati.

Sunetra Pawar’s loss marks the second consecutive defeat for Ajit Pawar’s close associates in Lok Sabha elections, as his son Parth Pawar also lost in Maval in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where Shrirang Barne won comfortably.
